The Knight Frank Vineyard Index
Part of the Knight Frank’s “Global Property Wealth Report” in conjunction with Citi has just released their 2011 findings and in the section “The Knight Frank Vineyard Index”. The findings are not very promising for Old World Vineyards. French pedigree vineyards sell today for US$642,000 per hectare but that is down 14%. Napa fairs worse with a 25% loss in vineyard prices. In fact there is only two world wine area that has not lost but retained its price value and only two that increased, Chile by 8% and Mendoza Argentina by a whopping 13%. Both Mendoza and Chile are recognized as ‘excellent’ wine producers and Mendoza still offers the lowest cost to buy a vineyard, about 11 times less than Napa even after their 25% loss in value.
